In practical terms, this means that every time you double your distance from a sound source, the sound pressure level drops by about 6 decibels. If you are measuring a specific noise (like a loud appliance), always note how far away you are standing. A measurement of “70 dB” is meaningless without knowing if it was taken 1 meter or 10 meters away from the source.
